Steve Carpenter has followed his passion for painting and teaching from the United States to Europe and back over the past four decades. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Steve moved to Rochester, N.Y., in the late '90s after a successful 30-year career in Monaco. Since 2002, he has operated the Steve Carpenter Gallery and Art Center, a school and gallery modeled on the European "l'atelier de peintre," in a renovated industrial building on Anderson Avenue in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts.
Steve's works have been shown in 12 countries around the world, as well as locally. His most-recent international exhibition was at the Bell tree Tower in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2009.
Steve is co-founder of and adviser to the New York Figure Study Guild, based in Rochester, and has created covers for five books published by Rochester-based poetry press BOA Editions.
He has received numerous awards for his painting and his teaching, including the 2010 Artist of the Year Award from the Arts & Cultural Council of Rochester.
Steve grew up in Portland, Oregon, and studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. He began his career as an illustrator for Walt Disney Company and worked for Disney for a year before heading to Europe in the early '60s to study the Old Masters. While painting, he also worked at a Paris ad agency and as a freelance illustrator before moving to Monte Carlo in the late '60s to teach and run his gallery. His many patrons included Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Steve also created postage stamps and an official poster for the Principality of Monaco.
Steve moved back to the United States in 1998, settling in Rochester, primarily because of his familiarity with the Rochester Zen Center.
Steve and his wife, Judy, a children's librarian, live in Brighton, NY.
